Join the Fifth and Final Stop on the TWD Paint Challenge This Saturday, May 30

My lovelies, pack your binoculars and paints because our fifth and final stop of the TWD Paint Challenge is taking us to THE SERENGETI!! Join me one last time this Saturday (tomorrow) May 30 @ 1 PM EST on IG LIVE as we paint from the majestic and otherworldly beauty of Tanzania, Africa!!

Few trips in my life have radically and immeasurably changed my worldview quite like visiting Tanzania in November 2015. Camping (and I don’t mean glamping haha) under the stars of the National Park while wild elephants, hyenas, and baboons brushed up against our tent, is one of my wildest and most exhilarating travel memories to date.

Since we’ve already conquered painting the figure in Cartagena and the French Riviera, I wanted to finish our amazing journey together by painting from the animals of the Serengeti…with a surprise twist!! Our photo reference for this Saturday is above, however, we will be painting the image as if it were night vs day, like the image below!!

Seeing packs of wild elephants walk together under the acacia trees while the lions and lionesses slept, ate, and roared from the early mornings to evenings, was so incredibly moving. Sunrise and sunset in the Serengeti are unlike anything I’ve seen before. They all beg to be painted and so we will!

Supplies for Saturday:

  1. Watercolor paper, white multipurpose sketch pad, or computer paper.
  2. 1/2 inch angle brush, size 5 or 8 round brush, and size 0 round for details.
  3. Primary set of watercolors, gouaches, or acrylics.
  4. Colored pencils.
  5. Ruler and eraser.

If you are looking for a bit of inspiration to get you in the Serengeti state of mind, you can check out my Illustrated Guide to Tanzania with Condé Nast Traveler here. You can also check out a film or two from the list below before we meet.

“Serengeti” Movies to Inspire:

  1. The Lion King (technically animated from Kenya but the sentiment is there)
  2. Holiday in the Wild (really sweet Netflix film with Kristin Davis & Rob Lowe)
  3. Serengeti (2011 Documentary)
  4. Africa: The Serengeti (1994 Short Documentary)
  5. Out of Africa (1985 Meryl Streep & Robert Redford)

I can’t wait to paint from our Serengeti safari together, my loves!! See you all on IG Live this Saturday May 30 @ 1 PM EST!!
